Neutrinos were one of the first things formed in the universe, even before atoms were formed and neutrino beams always sounded cool, so why not? Not much is known about these particles other than the fact that they travel at near the speed of light. There are 3 ‘flavours’ of neutrinos: electron neutrino, muon neutrino and tau neutrino. They are produced in interactions (i.e. in the sun) and start their travel with these flavours, but may fluctuate between flavours along the way. This is called neutron oscillation. There are however some neutrinos that have a mixture of flavours and don’t change with time. Because of this, they have distinct masses and are called mass eigenstates. Hope you enjoyed this brief encounter on neutrinos!
