This time, we're talking about Quantum Field Theory! This theory is the idea that all space and matter consists of fields. And when these fields vibrate, or have energy applied to them, this raised energy state is what we perceive as particles. So that electron is just what we see of a vibration in the electron field. And there are many different fields too, all intertwined and influencing each other, such as the proton field, the photon field and the neutron field. Because they are all so close to each other, the vibrations in one field can influence the other and this is how this theory explains how different types of particles interact with each other (e.g. the attraction between protons and electrons). And because the energy, once applied, propagates throughout the field, the particles are shown to move through space. This theory was based on Paul Dirac's famous 1927 paper on “The quantum theory of the emission and absorption of radiation” in his attempt to unify quantum mechanics and relativity.
